Full disclosure: This is a review on period underwear. So get out now if you don’t feel comfortable reading about it or if you don’t think it’s relevant to you. Otherwise you’re very welcome to stay. If you’re a regular girl that endures that one week of crimson hell. trust me when I say these are truly magical panties.
I’m sure all, if not most, women have a designated set of “shitty underwear”. You know what I’m talking about—the underwear you use especially for when your period comes. Personally my set was made up of horrid looking period underwear from Hong Kong. I’ve been buying these horror panties for as long as I remember. They did the job — they caught any extra leakage and I didn’t care if they were ruined. They were my backup incase anything disastrous happened. But if I wore anything remotely hugging, you would be able to see the awful outline and they were just very uncomfortable. The best way I can description I can muster up is that it felt like I was wearing a weird plastic sheet.
Then late last year I came across the awesome ads for THINX. To put it simply, they are underwear designed for your period. They aren’t ugly. They feel amazing, and they give you choices. You can choose from cheeky to boyshorts, and even thongs. Each type of of underwear is able to hold a different amount.
I know period panties may be a turn off for some people. Who wants to be sitting in their yucky blood all day? But it’s not like that. You get to do what is best for you — you can choose to wear the underwear only or pair it with your panty liners, etc. There is no “right” way of using them, it’s just whatever is comfortable for you. Personally I was already open to using period panties as I was using them previously (just very shitty versions of them). I use my liners with my THINX on heavier days and go THINX-only on my lighter days.
As pictured above, the “mechanics” of the undies is comprised of these four components:
- MOISTURE-WICKING: Keeps you feeling dry, even when you’ve had a spill.
- ANTI-MICROBIAL: Kicks bacteria’s butt all day long.
- ABSORBENT: Holds up to two tampons’ worth of liquid (dependent on which type you buy)
- LEAK-RESISTANT: Even your whitest white pants are safe.
What I love about THINX is that:
- They actually look like (nice) underwear.
- They feel comfortable.
- You don’t see a weird outline when wearing “hugging” clothing.
- Easy as hell to clean. Simply rinse with cold water before throwing them into the wash and hang to dry.
- Their team is amazeballs and holds all sorts of fun events in NYC.
I’ve tried out the hiphugger and cheeky, and I love the ‘cheeky’ the best. It’s not to say I don’t use my hiphugger. I definitely use it on my heavier days. You can build your own cycle set to best match you. Only you know when you need a little extra security and when you don’t.
The only real reservation I have is the price. Their panties range from $24-$38USD. The hi-waist panties being on the more expensive end of the spectrum. If you’re planning to build a set, you can easily blow $200 in a hot second. To soften the blow a little, every THINX panties you buy helps to fund AFRIpads. You can read more about that here.
But here’s how I feel about the price after trying them out for a good five months: they are totally worth the investment. Whilst I haven’t tested them for durability, I don’t see them breaking apart any time soon. I would definitely buy them again.
Two orders later, I am a proud owner of a complete cycle set. If you’re still feeling unsure, I get it. I’ve been there. Luckily, they also get it and offer a no-questions-asked return/exchange policy for first time orders, within 60 days.
As for me, I started off by ordering just two THINX undies to try. When my time came around and I tested them out, I was gutted that I didn’t build a complete cycle to begin with. Switching from THINX to my horrible panties from Hong Kong was almost devastating. Needless to say, I quickly made a second order to complete my set.
So if you struggle every month with your periods, I swear THINX will make it a lot easier. If you’re looking to try it out, here’s a $10 credit to help you get started: http://fbuy.me/duXDg. I also get a cool $10 if you sign up through that link. :)
Also I genuinely love these THINX panties and this post isn’t sponsored by THINX in any shape or form.
Try it, friends.
